The quality of "monumentality" is attributed to the buildings of few historical epochs or cultures more frequently or consistently than to those of the Roman Empire. It is this quality that has helped to make them enduring models for builders of later periods. Although no single word existed in antiquity for the qualities that modern authors regard as making up that term, its Latin derivation--from monumentum, "a monument"--attests plainly to the presence of the concept in the mentalities of ancient Romans, and the development of that notion through the Roman era laid the foundation for the classical ideal of monumentality, which reached a height in early modern Europe. This book is also the first full-length study of architecture in the Antonine Age--when it is generally agreed the Roman Empire was at its height. By exploring the public architecture of Roman Italy and both Western and Eastern provinces of the Roman Empire from the point of view of the benefactors who funded such buildings, the architects who designed them, and the public who used and experienced them, Edmund Thomas analyzes the reasons why Roman builders sought to construct monumental buildings and uncovers the close link between architectural monumentality and the identity and ideology of the Roman Empire itself.

About the Author Hiroshi Fukumura studied the biocompatibility of polymers in the Government Industrial Research Institute of Osaka from 1983 to 1988. He became an Assistant Professor at the Kyoto Institute of Technology in 1988, then moved to the Department of Applied Physics of Osaka University in 1991, where he worked on the mechanism of laser ablation and laser molecular implantation. Since 1998, he is Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Tohoku University. His current interests include molecular physical chemistry employing ultra–fast spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy.

Masahiro Irie received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Kyoto University and his Ph.D. degree in radiation chemistry from Osaka University. He started his research on photochemistry at Hokkaido University in 1970 and went on to Osaka University. In 1988 he was appointed to Professor at Kyushu University, where he initiated the study of photochromic diarylethene derivatives. He is currently interested in developing single–crystalline photochromism and single–molecule photochemistry using diarylethene derivatives.

Yasuhiro Iwasawa pioneered the integration of modern surface science and organometallic chemistry into surface chemistry and catalysis on the atomic/molecular scale, and he has a leading position in the creation of the new research field of catalysis and surface chemistry at oxide surfaces by XAFS and SPM techniques. His honors include the Japan IBM Science Award (1990), Inoue Prize for Science (1996), Catalysis Society of Japan Award (1999), The Surface Science Society of Japan Award (2000), Medal with Purple Ribbon (2003), and the Chemical Society of Japan Award (2004).

Hiroshi Masuhara held a Professorship at the Kyoto Institute of Technology (1984–1991) before returning to Osaka University as Professor in the Department of Applied Physics. With his research, he opened a whole new field on laser nanospectroscopy, nanophotochemistry and laser nanoablation. In addition to his position in Osaka, he joined the Hamano Life Science Research Foundation in Kobe for research activities in bioscience and biotechnology. He has edited ten English and three Japanese books on topics ranging from photochemistry and spectroscopy to micro– and nanophotonics.

Following a party, Mac (Damaine Radcliff), Skinny Carter (De'Shawn Washington) and their friend Tyler Gage (Channing Tatum) break into the Maryland School of Arts and damage many of the props in the school's theatre. When a security guard appears, Tyler helps the other two escape and accepts the blame. He is sentenced to 200 hours of community service, which he has to serve at the school. While working, he watches a dance class and meets Nora Clark (Jenna Dewan), a student preparing for her "senior showcase." The performance could determine if she gets a job with a dance company. Later, Tyler mockingly shows his friends some of the dance moves he learned while watching the school's ballet dancers, mixing them with break-dance.

Synopsis:
This is the intimate story of hope in Africa, and it surrounds the up and down tale of rhinos in Botswana. In the 1990’s the Botswana Defense Force launched a massive military action to stop poaching and this marked the turning point in rhino conservation there, as they are gathered up as a national effort and secured, then brought back to the wild. It covers new behavior, adventures with lions, hyenas and elephants but it solves one of he great mysteries about rhinos, and why they move away from where they are introduced, and what they go in search of. The rhino are back in Botswana having dodged extinction for the third time. This heartwarming story is a personal journey and testament to the efforts of humans when we are at our best.
